JCF has been implementing Agriculture and Livestock intervention in Pabna district since 2013 and High Value Quality Fish Culture of Native Species Project in Natore district since 2019. The projects are targeting marginal farmers’ income generation through sustainable extension of agriculture and capacity building with special attention on indigenous variety of chicken and fish culture. Mst. Maleka KHatun of Iswardi Upazila under Pabna district is one such farmer who was provided with training on rearing native variety hen, special cages for chicks, financial support, vaccine. She has the plan to go for commercial rearing of this variety as it has high demand and value in the market. Al-Amin of Natore district is another example of high value native fish culture. Bangladesh is a riverine country and its rives were once full of various native fish variety. But due to the unplanned and rapid urbanization and industrialization the water bodies are randomly filled and many fishes are now extinct or threatened due to loss of habitat. One such fish species is Pabda (one type of small catfish) which was abundant in rivers and beels. Al-Amin as a member of JCF showed his interest in establishing demo plot on his 50 decimals of land for culturing Pabda and received fish fries, compost fertilizer, fish net, medicine and some other required materials. He also started vegetable cultivation on the pond side lands. Now he is solvency in his family and his success has encouraged others to culture local fish variety.
