মুক্তিযুদ্ধের ময়দান থেকে যশোরের প্রত্যন্ত গ্রামের মেঠোপথ — মোঃ আজাদুল কবির আরজুর জীবন ছিল একটানা একটি অঙ্গীকারের নাম: মানুষের পাশে দাঁড়ানো। স্বাধীনতার পরও তিনি দেখলেন, দেশ বদলায়নি সবার জন্য সমানভাবে। যশোর কালেক্টরেটে বাবার অফিসে গিয়ে একদিন দেখেন, চায়ের দোকানদার তথাকথিত 'নিচু জাতের' সুইপার-মেথর-নাপিতদের গা না ছুঁইয়ে সাবধানে দূর থেকে কাপে চা ঢেলে দিচ্ছেন। দৃশ্যটা তাঁকে ক্ষুব্ধ করে তোলে — স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশেও কি মানুষ মানুষকে এভাবে দূরে সরিয়ে রাখবে? সুইপার কলোনিতে গিয়ে দেখেন বিস্তর দারিদ্র্য আর অশিক্ষা; নিজেকে 'শিক্ষিত-সভ্য' ভাবতে লজ্জা হয় তাঁর। সেখান থেকেই কয়েকজন সমমনা বন্ধুকে নিয়ে ১৯৭৫ সালে শুরু করেন বয়স্ক শিক্ষার কাজ — যার হাত ধরেই যাত্রা শুরু আজকের জাগরণী চক্রের।

From the battlefields of the Liberation War to the dirt roads of rural Jashore, Md. Azadul Kabir Arzoo's life carried one unbroken thread: standing beside people. Even after independence, he saw that the country had not changed equally for everyone. Visiting his father's office at the Jashore Collectorate one day, he watched a tea-stall owner pour tea from a careful distance into the cups of so-called "low-caste" sweepers, cobblers and barbers, taking pains never to touch them. The scene enraged him — would independent Bangladesh still keep people apart this way? Visiting the sweeper colony, he found widespread poverty and illiteracy, and felt ashamed to think of himself as "educated and civilised." From there, with a handful of like-minded friends, he began adult-literacy work in 1975 — the same thread that grew into today's Jagorani Chakra.

১৯৭৫ সালের শেষ দিকে যশোরের কয়েকজন তরুণ সহকর্মীর সঙ্গে মিলে যে ছোট্ট উদ্যোগের সূচনা তিনি করেছিলেন — এবং যাতে কারিতাস থেকে বই ছাপার জন্য পাওয়া আট হাজার টাকার সহায়তা প্রথম দিকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখে — পরবর্তী পাঁচ দশকে তা পরিণত হয় দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিম বাংলাদেশের অন্যতম বৃহৎ বেসরকারি উন্নয়ন সংস্থা জাগরণী চক্র ফাউন্ডেশনে — আজ যা দেশের ৫০-এর বেশি জেলায় কাজ করছে।

In late 1975, alongside a handful of young colleagues in Jashore, he began the modest initiative that — helped early on by an eight-thousand-taka Caritas grant for printing literacy books — grew, over the following five decades, into Jagorani Chakra Foundation, one of the largest private development organisations in southwestern Bangladesh, today active across more than fifty districts.
